Rick Brewer named director of Medical Center Library

Rick Brewer has been named director of the Medical Center Library (MCL). He has served
as interim director of the MCL since August 2013.
A three-time graduate of UK, Rick holds a bachelor’s degree in business
administration, a bachelor’s degree in accounting, and a master’s
degree in library and information science. He has a long
history of work in UK
Libraries and other institutions, and brings to the position a wealth of
library management experience.
Rick began his professional UK Libraries career in 1985 working
primarily in public services. Beginning in 1994, he served as a reference
services librarian for the information and education services team of the MCL
until 2001, then served from 2001 to 2004 as the team leader of access
services. Beginning in 2005, he served as the MCL assistant director for
research, education, and clinical services, until assuming the position as
interim director in 2013.

Sarah Dorpinghaus, Digital Archivist in the Special Collections Research Center, presented
at the Kentucky Council on Archives Spring meeting as part of a panel
entitled "Streamlining Workflows: Transforming 20th Century Metadata
Processes for 21st Century Access." She discussed her experiences
migrating digital objects to the revamped Kentucky Digital Library and
ExploreUK, specifically the importance of utilizing programmer assistance in
automating imaging workflows.

Megan Mummey, Collections Management Archivist, presented a talk
entitled "Implementing ArchivesSpace: A Case Study at the University of
Kentucky" at KCA. She provided a tour of the functionality of the new
collections management database and discussed its implementation within UK
Libraries Special Collections Research Center.
UK Libraries represented on KCA board
Sarah Dorpinghaus was elected vice-chair of the Kentucky Council on
Archives Board for a three year term. She will
work with other board members to plan KCA meetings, organize training
opportunities for archivists and librarians, and promote archives-related
activities across the state and region.

After serving a term as a member-at-large, Jaime Marie Burton will
remain on the KCA board, beginning a new three-year term as KCA Newsletter Editor.
