Agricultural Information Center participates in a crop of outreach events

This fall, Agricultural Information Center personnel have participated in various outreach and promotion activities. Valerie Perry gave a presentation during the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment (CAFE) orientation for new faculty. Both she and Jason Keinsley participated in the August 22 reception for new CAFE faculty hosted by the CAFE Faculty Council.

During the Ag Roundup the AIC showcased resources and services, including the two new collaborative learning rooms utilized for information literacy sessions. This is the major College of Agriculture outreach event held each year and is an excellent opportunity for the AIC to reach nearly 2,700 individuals.

Attendees during the four-day event held September 3-6  included:
• 700 staff from throughout the state for Staff Appreciation Day
• 500 Rotarians & LFUCG Officials and 200 high school student recruits for Rotary Day
• 500 attendees for the campus Student/Faculty/Staff Picnic
• 225 state legislators, Farm Bureau officials, Ag Development Board members, and the Tobacco Task Force members for Ag Leadership Day
• 750 alumni for department reunions and the closing Roundup festivities before kickoff on Saturday


The AIC exhibit was created by Lauren Robinson (AIC Graduate Intern), Beth Reeder (AIC Staff), and Jason Keinsley (Agricultural Librarian). Additional exhibit staffing included Melinda Borie (AIC Graduate Intern) and Valerie Perry (Head of the AIC).

The Keeneland Association Room dedication on September 23 drew participants from UK Libraries, UK Administration, UK Student Government, and the Keeneland Association.

Following a program in the Alumni Gallery featuring Carl Nathe and remarks by Shawn Livingston, Director of the William T. Young Library, Jake Ingram, SGA President, Bill Thomason, President and CEO of the Keeneland Association, and President Eli Capilouto, a ribbon-cutting officially opened the newly-renovated Keeneland Association Room.

Doug Boyd Leads Midwest Archives Conference 2014 Fall Symposium on Oral History

Dr. Doug Boyd, director of the Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History at the Special Collections Research Center, recently led a  two day symposium on  Oral History, Archives, and Innovation.  The symposium. sponsored by the Midwest Archives Conference, was held at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, September 12 – 13.  

Dr. Boyd engaged archivists in exploration and discussion of best practices for curating and disseminating digital oral histories. Fifty-five oral history professionals attended the symposium.

Sarah Dorpinghaus earns Digital Archives Specialist Certificate

Sarah Dorpinghaus, Special Collections Research Center digital archivist, recently earned a Digital Archives Specialist Certificate through the Society of American Archivists Digital Archives Specialist (DAS) Curriculum Program. The DAS Curriculum, developed by experts in the field of digital archives, is structured in tiers of study that allow participants to choose courses based on specific knowledge, training, and needs. Sarah’s expertise in this area will allow UK Libraries to better address the complex issues revolving around born-digital collection material and future acquisitions.

Retirement reception for Barb Hale

Barb Hale, Interlibrary Loan, will retire at the end of the month.  On September 29, all are invited to a reception for Barb from 2 to 4 p.m., in room B108C of the William T. Young Library. Congratulations to Barb on this next step and thank you for your many contributions to the success of UK Libraries.

UK Libraries represented at Kentucky Library Association Conference

Many UK Libraries faculty and staff journeyed to the Kentucky Library Association Conference in Louisville.

Laura Whayne, librarian at the Kentucky Transportation Center, became President of the Kentucky Library Association. Alex Grigg, manager of the Lexmark Library, is Secretary.

The Keeneland Association won the Natcher Award for library philanthropy. Keeneland was nominated by UK Libraries for their support of remodeling and upgrading the Keeneland Association Room in William T. Young Library.

New Subway Cafe in Science Library to be dedicated

Keeneland Association Room dedication set for September 23




Student organizations will be able to reserve the room.
The University of Kentucky community is invited to the dedication of the Keeneland Assocation Room in William T. Young Library. Thanks to a gift from the Keeneland Association, the room has been fitted with updated, modular furniture suitable for flexible seating arrangements, new paint and carpet, a new flat-screen monitor for presentations, and prints of archival photographs of scenes from Keeneland. The goal of the new room design is to provide a space for collaborative learning and discussion.

The program to dedicate the Keeneland Association Room will be held at 4 p.m., September 23, in the Alumni Gallery. After a ribbon cutting a reception will follow in the Alumni Gallery and the Keeneland Association Room will be open for tours. Representatives from UK administration, Student Government, and UK Libraries will participate. Everyone is encouraged to attend the dedication of this important space in Young Library.


UK Libraries participates in celebration of Wendell Ford's 90th birthday

Deirdre Scaggs, Associate Dean for the Special Collections Research Center and Dean Terry Birdwhistell attended a celebration of Senator Wendell H. Ford’s 90th birthday last Monday in Owensboro.  Held at the Wendell H. Ford Government Education Center, the event also featured the opening of a new exhibit, Cracking the Whip, highlighting Senator Ford’s service as Majority Whip in the United States Senate.  Clay Ford, Senator Ford's grandson, is a member of the UK Libraries National Advisory Board.
