Coming next week: Bird's Eye View back-to-school special edition

The next edition of the Bird's Eye View will feature photos and updates from back-to-school events at William T. Young Library, the Special Collections Research Center, the Engineering Library, and across campus. From orientation fairs to getting "Loud @ the Library," UK Libraries is starting the 2015 - 2016 academic year with enthusiasm.

Kentucky Foundation for Women awards include UK Libraries Special Collections and Nunn Center for Oral History

The Kentucky Foundation for Women celebrated its 30th anniversary by awarding more than $20,000 to nine artists and organizations that have been at the forefront of creating feminist art for social change in Kentucky. Two of the awards are in conjunction with UK Libraries.

Reel World String Band received $3,000 to collaborate with the UK Libraries Special Collections Research Center to document and archive the band's 38 year history, and to host a reception highlighting the social justice work and grassroots organizing that are a part of that history.

Lilith Theatre Company of Louisville received $3,000 to work with the Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History to create a docu-drama style play based on oral histories of Louisville citizens, particularly women, who are connected in some way to the neighborhoods that make up the city's "chemical corridor," and to use the piece to inspire dialogue about the history and racial politics of the neighborhood in relation to the city as a whole.

Medical Center Library interns receive Library Student Outreach Awards

Two Medical Center Library interns, Teresa McGinley and Matthew Noe, have been awarded Library Student Outreach Awards from the National Networks of Libraries of Medicine, Greater Midwest Region. The awards allow students to participate in meetings, conference sessions and other activities to learn about the importance of health information outreach and services conducted by librarians in the Greater Midwest Region. Both Teresa and Matt have been awarded up to $1,000 to attend and present their research at the upcoming Midwest Chapter American American Medical Association conference in Louisville, October 2 to 6.

Rare Japanese materials cataloged by UK Libraries

A book from the rare Japanese materials collection

Kazuko Hioki, Asian Studies liaison librarian, and Kathryn Lybarger, cataloging and metadata librarian, recently collaborated on the cataloging of a collection of rare Japanese materials purchased for UK Libraries. The collection materials date from 1686 to 1928 and cover a wide variety of topics including: mathematics, travel, and flower arranging. The collection includes books, magazine issues, woodblock prints, and a painting on a scroll. 

The materials are held in the Special Collections Research Center Rare Books area and will be used in Kazuko's JPN 405 course "Introduction to Japanese Publishing Culture" she is teaching this fall.

UK Libraries is currently seeking applicants for the 2015 - 2016 Undergraduate Diversity Scholar Internships. The Diversity Scholar(s) will participate in activities across UK Libraries, learning about career options related to academic research libraries. During this paid internship they will participate in and lead activities focused on the benefits of diversity, multicultural awareness, and inclusivity among UK students, staff, and faculty.

More information about how to apply to the Undergraduate Diversity Scholar program is online. The deadline for applications is September 16, 2015. 

Jen Martin appointed to LBGTQ* faculty/staff advisory board

Jen Martin

Jen Martin, assistant head of circulation at William T. Young Library, is a member of the faculty/staff advisory board for the newly-formed UK Office of LGBTQ* Resources. She was appointed in August 2015 to serve a one-year term.

The board supports the work of the Office of LGBTQ* Resources in its mission to highlight LGBTQ* experiences while decreasing marginalization on campus. Board members represent and promote the Office of LGBTQ* Resources, attend at least six to eight meetings of the board per year, and volunteer for at least one Office of LGBTQ* Resources event per academic semester.

Sarah Wade is Ezra Gillis University Archives Fellow

Sarah Wade recently joined the Special Collections Research Center as the Ezra Gillis University Archives Fellow. She will spend three months processing the Ron Eller papers. 

Sarah recently relocated to Lexington from Chicago, where she was a librarian and archivist at the Museum of Contemporary Art. She received her master’s degrees in library science and art history from Pratt Institute in New York, where she pursued coursework focused on cultural history and special collections, and earned an advanced certificate in archives. As a new resident of Kentucky, Sarah is particularly excited to have the opportunity to process the Ron Eller papers, as it is a collection which will allow her to learn more about the culture and history of both the university and the Applachian region. 

UK Libraries is able to offer this fellowship through the support of the Ezra Gillis family and their commitment to preserving the university’s history. The Ezra Gillis University Archives Fellow is selected each summer to conduct a professional archives project, usually post-graduate, focusing on University Archives collections. Last year’s fellow, Margaret Joyce, processed and prepared a finding aid for the Ezra Gillis papers.
