Tates Creek senior interns at UK Libraries

Evelyn C. Howard, a senior at Tates Creek High School in Lexington, recently completed a two-month internship in the William T. Young Library Reference Services Department. As part of the Fayette County Public Schools Experienced-Based Career Education (EBCE) Program, Evelyn observed work at the reference desk and a library instruction session, researched books and videos for a collection development project, and created an online research guide incorporating information from books, databases, and other library resources. Jennifer Bartlett, head of Reference Services, supervised the internship and Evelyn also had the opportunity to work with Carla Cantagallo, head of Distance Learning Library Services; Debbie Sharp, Information Literacy coordinator; and Christie Peters, head of the Science Library and eScience Initiatives. UK Libraries frequently participates in the EBCE program, which offers high school seniors academic credit while learning about a variety of careers through hands-on experience.

Undergraduate Diversity Scholars to present research

The Diversity Task Force invites all faculty, staff, and students of UK Libraries to a program concluding the academic year for the Diversity Scholars Program. Gabe Tomlin and Alecia Johnson will discuss their  research projects and their internship experiences on Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at 3 p.m. in B108C William T. Young Library. Light refreshments will be included in the event.

Two electronic displays currently in the Hub of William T. Young Library UK Libraries are the work of the Diversity Scholars. What's Today Again? features information about selected holidays that "often go unrecognized or misunderstood," according to exhibit creator Alecia. The other display, Occupy: Black and Brown Bodies in White Spaces, "uses imagery to disturb the continuing narrative of whiteness in this predominately white space," says Gabe.  The exhibits will be on display through finals week.

New UK Libraries resource: African American Newspapers collection

With support provided by the William T. Young Library Endowment, UK Libraries purchased access to Accessible Archives’ African American Newspapers.  This collection contains “a wealth of information about cultural life and history during the 1800s and is rich with first-hand reports of major events and issues of the day, including the Mexican War, Presidential and Congressional addresses, Congressional abstracts, business and commodity markets, the humanities, world travel and religion.”  Titles in the collection include the Christian Recorder, Frederick Douglass’ Paper, Provincial Freeman, and the National Era.  Thanks to our donors for making this purchase possible    

Employee tickets now available for UK Libraries Spring Gala

The 2015 Spring Gala 

UK Libraries faculty and staff are invited to purchase tickets to the 2016 Spring Gala at a discounted price of $20 each. Tickets may be purchased from Amanda Jewell in the Dean's Office, with payment made in cash or via check made payable to the University of Kentucky. Each employee may purchase up to two discounted tickets. The Gala will be held on May 10, 2016, at 6 p.m.

Tickets to the Spring Gala include the presentation ceremony for the Paul A. Willis Outstanding Faculty Award, recognition of this year’s Outstanding Staff Awards recipients (to be announced soon) and the UK Libraries Medallion for Intellectual Achievement.

The Willis Award this year will be presented to Frank Davis, Medical Center librarian. A full description of Frank's achievements will be publicized beforehand in a news release from the university.

The 2016 recipient of the UK Libraries Medallion for Intellectual Achievement is Dr. James C. Klotter. Klotter is the state historian of Kentucky, a prolific author of more than twenty history books, former director of the Kentucky Historical Society, and a member of the faculty at Georgetown College.

Following the awards presentation, the Gala will include a reception in William T. Young Library with catered hors d'oeuvres, beverages, and an opportunity to mingle with honored guests including UK President Eli Capilouto and Provost Tim Tracy.
