Karyn Hinkle will join the UK Libraries faculty as Visual Resources Librarian effective July 1.  She earned her bachelor's degree in Art History from the University of Kentucky and her MSLIS from the Pratt Institute. Karyn most recently served as art librarian at Northwestern University.

Jeff Dycus leaves UK Libraries

Jeff Dycus, library specialist in the Electronic Resources unit since July 2013, has accepted a position as the Online Access Administrator for the Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort. In his new position Jeff will be responsible for the planning and implementation of new and legacy access technologies in support of improved digital access to all KHS collections. His new duties will also include working with the public, serving as a resource for specialized research services, and participating in KHS educational programming. 

We thank Jeff for all of his contributions, not only to the ER Unit, but to UK Libraries generally - particularly his recent service on the Alma Migration Task Force and his troubleshooting via the LIB-ER listserv. We will miss his quiet but friendly demeanor, his technical skills and insights, and his commitment to excellent service.  Jeff’s last day will be Friday, March 25. Please wish him well in this new endeavor.  

Ashley Runyon leaves University Press of Kentucky

Ashley Runyon, senior acquisitions editor at the University Press of Kentucky, has resigned from UK. Her last day at work will be April 8, 2016.

Ashley acquired many titles in UPK's regional trade list, including the series on bourbon, books in Appalachian studies, and books on Kentucky subjects.  She established several new series including Place Matters: New Directions in Appalachian Studies, and a contemporary poetry and fiction series co-sponsored by Centre College. Ashley also worked as development coordinator for UPK and secured important partnerships with the Frazier Museum in Louisville and Kentucky State Parks.

We wish her well in her new post as senior acquisitions editor at Indiana University Press.

UK Libraries participates in Engineers Day

Shaver Engineering Library and the Transportation Library participated in the UK College of Engineering E-Day event on Saturday, February 27. E-Day is held annually on campus and is open to the public, with exhibits and activities promoting and demonstrating all aspects of engineering. Children are especially encouraged to learn more about engineering on E-Day. The Engineering and Transportation Libraries offered a "100 Cup Challenge," Giant Jenga, chess, and checkers in the Shaver Engineering Library.  Sue Smith, head of Shaver Engineering Library, Laura Whayne, head of the Transportation Library, senior library technician Jeffrey Dalrymple, graduate student intern Natalie Bishop, and undergraduate student worker Priscilla Landham all participated in the event.

LEX Week students welcomed to UK Libraries

LEX Weeki students met with their UK Libraries mentors

UK Libraries welcomed School of Information Science graduate students for LEX Week beginning Monday, February 29, 2016. The students had breakfast with their mentors and program organizers in the Special Collections Research Center.

Friday, March 4, at noon, the students will present what they have learned during their week-long internships. All UK Libraries faculty and staff are invited to the lunchtime presentation in King Library. Pizza will be provided.

Reel World String Band archives dedication at Special Collections Research Center

The Reel World String Band

The celebration and presentation of the Reel World String Band archives will be on Wednesday, March 23, 2016, 7 p.m., in the Great Hall of the Special Collections Research Center, Margaret I. King Library. The Reel World String Band spans 39 years and its history represents a body of cultural and feminist activism that has influenced and supported dozens of social movements in Kentucky and the Appalachian region. Since 1977, the band has toured all through the United States, Canada, and Italy, played on picket lines, women’s festivals, square dances, and thousands of other venues including many memorable events at the Singletary Center for the Arts. 

To christen the archival work and to celebrate the Kentucky Foundation for Women’s 30th Anniversary, the band along with Kentucky Poet Laureate George Ella Lyon, author Silas House, and other guests will sing some Reel World songs, feature highlights of that history in tributes and an exhibit, and enjoy a reception of dessert and coffee.  The program will take place from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. followed by a reception and exhibit opening. The event is free and open to the public, and sponsored by the Kentucky Foundation for Women and University of Kentucky Libraries, Special Collections Research Center.

Save the date: Learning Lab student presentations

Students from the Special Collections Research Center Learning Lab program will present their year-long projects on April 14, 2016, from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Great Hall of Margaret I. King Library. The students have been engaged since the beginning of the academic year in processing the Frankel and Curtis Architectural Drawings Collection. The Learning Lab program is managed by Stacie Williams. A reception will follow the presentations.
