UK Libraries Releases New ARC LibGuide
March marked the 49th anniversary of the Appalachian Regional Commission’s
(ARC) creation. UK has created a
LibGuide to showcase important ARC resources and celebrate this
anniversary. On April 9, 1963 President
John F. Kennedy established the President's Appalachian Regional Commission
(PARC) and appointed them with the responsibility of creating legislation which
would increase economic development of the Appalachian Region. PARC developed the ARC which was signed into
law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on March 9, 1965.
UK serves as
a Center of Excellence (COE) for the ARC. This means UK Libraries will work to
create a comprehensive ARC collection.
UK also holds the ARC’s archive in Special Collections. To the left is a
photo of the cover of Appalachia vol.
21, no. 1, 1988. Appalachia was a
journal published by the ARC between 1969 and 2008. Read more about the ARC at http://libguides.uky.edu/ARC.
