Deidre Scaggs participates in archival panel at University of Pittsburgh

Deirdre Scaggs
Deirdre Scaggs, associate dean for the Special Collections Research Center, participated as a panelist at the University of Pittsburgh School of Information Sciences on May 29, 2015, as part of the Bernadette Callery Archives Lecture Series. The panel discussion, “Charting the Future of Archives and Archival Work,” also included scholars from the University of Pittsburgh School of Information Sciences, the Smithsonian Institution, and the University of Alabama School of Library and Information Studies.

The discussion began with the premise that, “Predictions abound that we are losing our documentary heritage as we move more deeply into the Digital Age. Meanwhile archivists and archival researchers and scholars are grappling with the preservation of digital records, while others are trying to invent new fields such as digital forensics and digital curation or stewardship.”

Panelists commented on the archival future and the role and impact of archival work in society, the changing nature of archival education, and the future of archives and the archival profession.
