Panel invites collaboration between instructors and librarians

UK Libraries will host a panel discussion titled “Stories From the Classroom: Tales of Successful Collaborations Between Instructors and Librarians” from 10 a.m. to noon, Wednesday, May 11, in room B108C at William T. Young Library. This event is open to all UK faculty and staff. 

The panel discussion will encourage instructors to utilize librarians to develop students’ abilities to locate and critically evaluate scholarly information. The panel will be comprised of Joanne Cattafesta, faculty lecturer in the Department of Instructional Communication and Research; Daniel K. Howe, professor and director of graduate studies in the Department of Veterinary Science; Amy Murrell Taylor, associate professor in the Department of History; Rebecca Wiltberger, mentor and instructor in the Department of Writing, Rhetoric and Digital Studies; and Lin Xiang, instructor and senior academic coordinator in the Department of Biology.

A recent national survey of faculty members reported that about two-thirds of the respondents “strongly agreed that ‘improving their undergraduate students’ research skills related to locating and evaluating scholarly information’ is an important educational goal for the courses they teach.”

UK Libraries is integral to teaching and learning, research and outreach. UK Libraries collaborates with faculty across the campus to prepare students for leadership in the knowledge economy and a global society. These teaching partnerships advance the information literacy skills of students at all levels through active classroom instruction, online tutorials and course-specific web pages. This activity is central to UK Libraries’ strategic goal of expanded classroom and teaching engagement. UK librarians experiment and develop new digital formats for providing instruction to users at point of need and in concert with course assignments.

UK Libraries welcomes students to Spring 2015

As the spring semester began, Undergraduate Learning Librarian Beth Fuchs represented UK Libraries at the K2 Kickoff. The event welcomed new, transfer, and international students to campus. Beth created a presentation using animation video software to introduce students to UK Libraries. The presentation focused on the challenges of academic research and highlighted the role of UK Libraries faculty and staff in student success.

Martin and Information Literacy Coordinator Debbie Sharp introduced new graduate teaching assistants to the resources and services available to them through UK Libraries.

Heath advised the graduate students to get to know their academic liaisons, the subject specialist librarians who support them in their teaching and research needs.  Debbie focused on library support in the classroom, recommending the February 11 Graduate Student Workshop, “What Your Students Think They Know about Research and How You Can Help.” The workshop will highlight best practices in the design of library research assignments.    

Beth Fuchs selected for ACRL Immersion Assessment Track program

Beth Fuchs, Undergraduate Learning Librarian, recently participated in the Immersion Assessment Track program held by the Association of College and Research Libraries in Nashville, Tennessee. The selective program focuses on demonstrating the educational value of academic libraries and is intended for experienced information literacy librarians. ACRL’s numerous Immersion programs provide opportunities for small groups of librarians to work intensively on all aspects of information literacy. Beth is the second librarian from UK Libraries to participate in the Immersion Assessment Track program; the first was Debbie Sharp, Information Literacy Coordinator.
