Dr. Doug Boyd speaks at Personal Digital Archiving 2016

On May 12, 2016,  Dr. Doug Boyd, director of the Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History delivered the keynote address at Personal Digital Archiving 2016, a conference hosted by University of Michigan Library in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Dr. Boyd spoke about recent innovations at the Nunn Center and the impact of digital technologies on oral history in the archive. Specifically, he discussed new developments to OHMS (Oral History Metadata Synchronizer), the free, open source system that makes online audio and video searchable, and the development of Exactly, a tool designed to safely transfer born-digital material to the archive. Both are free open-source tools that were developed by the Nunn Center and UK Libraries.  

Stacie Williams is keynote speaker for Digital Library Forum

Stacie Williams, Special Collections Research Center Learning Lab manager, is the keynote speaker for the 2016 Digital Library Forum. According to DLF Forum planners, the "keynote will help us kick off a pragmatic, get-stuff-done conversation, unfolding over the following days." UK Libraries is a member institution of the DLF.

Stacie's keynote will focus on labor issues in our field, and we will share a title and abstract in the coming months. The 2016 DLF will take place in Milwaukee. Stacie is a Milwaukee native, a background she says shaped her perspectives on issues like the “Implications of Archival Labor”.

Exploring the past and future of agricultural economies in Kentucky

UK Libraries will sponsor "Thresh and Sow: The Past, Present, and Future of Agro-Food Economies in Kentucky," a panel discussion at West Sixth Brewing (501 W. Sixth Street, Lexington) on Monday, April 11, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Lilian Brislen, director of The Food Connection at the UK College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment will moderate the panel. The conversation will center around Kentucky's transition from a tobacco-centered agricultural economy to a focus on other crops and value-added food products.

The panel will include five prominent figures in the local food economy: Henry County farmer and cattle rancher David Neville; co-owner of Sweet Grass farm and Sweetgrass Granola Carolyn Gahnn; director of New Roots Louisville and the Fresh Stop project Karyn Moskowitz; Western Kentucky University folklorist and University Press of Kentucky author Ann Ferrell; and Bill Bickford, general manager of Good Foods Co-op. 

Good Foods Co-op will provide light refreshments for attendees and West Sixth’s usual drink offerings will be available for purchase.

Adrian Ho presents on scholarly communication during ALA Midwinter Meeting

Adrian Ho, director of Digital Scholarship at UK Libraries, spoke about scholarly communication at the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Leadership Symposium on January 8, 2016. The symposium, held in conjunction with the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting in Boston, was targeted at the ARL diversity cohort (students of underrepresented groups who are in the process of pursuing a graduate degree in library and information science).  Adrian's presentation introduced the cohort to the scholarly communication ecosystem and research libraries' roles in it.  The slides are available on UKnowledge. 

Dr. Stacey Greenwell presents at European Conference on Information Literacy

Dr. Stacey Greenwell

Dr. Stacey Greenwell, associate dean for Academic Affairs and Research, recently participated in the third European Conference on Information Literacy in Tallinn, Estonia. She presented "Creating Instructional Materials Using I-LEARN" and also chaired two conference sessions; "Best Practices in E-Learning and M-Learning" and "Professional Information Literacy." The conference included 195 presentations with contributors from 50 countries.

Dr. Greenwell served as a member of the Program Committee and will continue on the committee for the fourth European Conference on Information Literacy to be held in Prague in October 2016.
