The
University of Kentucky Libraries Special Collections Research Center recently
acquired the title Kentenia Mining Company:
Harlan and Bell Counties, Kentucky.
Incorporated in 1907, The Kentenia
Mining Company took its name from the states of
Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. At the height of its prosperity the company
controlled over 100 square miles of land in Harlan and Bell Counties in
southeastern Kentucky. The Norfolk and Western Railroad purchased the company in 1980 for $20 million (source: Kentucky
Encyclopedia). This publication contains “illustrations and tables from the
Davis Estate made by its engineers and experts” (Kentenia, pp. 5).
