Deirdre Scaggs, associate dean for Special
Collections, chaired two sessions at the
Society of American Archivists conference in Atlanta – “Recipes from
Culinary Collections: Creative (and Tasty!) Approaches to Outreach” and
“Archives and Institutional Power: A Critical Perspective.”
Ruth Bryan, director and university archivist in the SCRC, chaired “Capstone Officials and Public
Records: Risk, Buy-in, and Archival Selection.” The session consisted of
five case studies using the new National Archives and Records Administration’s
concept of “capstone officials” as a selection tool for certain categories of
public records scheduled for permanent retention. Ruth also presented “Public
University Faculty as Capstone Officials,” where she argued that faculty can be
considered capstone or senior university officials and demonstrated how this
approach has impacted the work of the UK records management task force
that she co-facilitates.
