As Program Manager for the Kentucky National Digital
Newspaper Program, Kopana Terry of UK Libraries worked with the
National Endowment for the Humanities National History Day’s 2013 winner in the
Senior Individual Documentary Division, freshman Joanna Slusarewicz of Paul
Lawrence Dunbar High.
This year, Kopana received a request from a young
man, Christopher Beebout, who was participating in the 2014 competition. His
topic was Cora Wilson Stewart’s Moonlight Schools. Christopher took second
place in the state competition. He has built an informative website on
his topic replete with audio excerpts provided by the Louie B. Nunn Center for
Oral History. He also incorporated images
from UK Libraries’ Cora Wilson Stewart Photographic Collection, courtesy of the
Kentucky Digital Library, and historic Kentucky Newspapers produced through
KY-NDNP, courtesy of Chronicling America.
Congratulations go to Christopher and Joanna, and
credit to UK Libraries faculty and staff who have assisted these young
scholars.
