Nostalgia and ice cream on the first day of classes

As part of the welcome back events offered to students during the first day of classes, the University of Kentucky Special Collections Research Center will host an open house featuring ice cream from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 27, in the foyer of the Margaret I. King Library. 
  

Coinciding with the open house is the unveiling of an  exhibition, "UK Stomping Grounds: Lexington Then and Now."  The exhibit features a collection of historic photographs and postcards of well-known Lexington hangouts, restaurants, shopping locations and landmarks, each paired with a current street view.

"UK Stomping Grounds" provides a unique perspective on how the area surrounding UK's campus and Lexington have changed through the years, along with a glimpse of many historic buildings that still comprise the Lexington streetscape. Photographs of downtown, West Sixth, Limestone, and Woodland Avenue highlight the exhibit, as well as places such as Joe Bologna's, Parlay Social and the Lexington Opera House.

The exhibition will remain on display through early October. The King Library is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
