Beth
Fuchs, undergraduate learning librarian, and Debbie Sharp, information literacy coordinator, gave a presentation
at the annual LOEX Conference in Denver, Colorado. Their presentation, “From
Pints to Barrels: Helping Topic-Focused Students See the Bigger Picture,” took
on the problem of helping students who are looking for books and articles, but
begin with narrow research topics. Drawing on cognitive science research and guided
by assessment results of student learning outcomes, Beth and Debbie illustrated
the theory and practice behind several locally-developed teaching activities to
use in these situations to encourage students to see the broader context
of their topics and find the research they need.
LOEX is the premier information literacy conference in the United States, attracting about 400 participants and highly selective in their acceptance of presentation proposals.
